Meet William Mackenzie. A Scotsman, a wrestler, a hairdresser and now owns a bar in Sanur.
William, how did you come to Bali?
I had a pub in Glasgow and I just wanted a complete change. I love the culture here, I know I can grow old here and be looked after. I came there about three and a half years and I will not return to the UK. My mother was 89 when she came here, she came four times and died here when she was 90 and she even wanted to live here. I had him cremated here and spread his ashes on the beach.
This is a touching story. Are you originally Glaswegian?
I was raised in Lanarkshire and I spent half my life there and half of my life in Glasgow.
This is a big change in Sanur
There is a big change. But a good change - educational change because it makes you very aware
.We're sitting here in your pub, Bali Pub - what is it age
Well, it was Bali Pub before but we the had for two years now.
What made you take over?
Boredom. I was always busy, always active. I'm actually not a lot myself, but I can cry a lot and the best advantage I sitting here talking to people, organize everything and that's all I have to do. That's what life is about.
I'm sure you've met some interesting characters here in the last two years?
I met very interesting people here. We had some great things too. We had a tea for the royal wedding, the celebrations of Diamond Jubilee, we had a special lunch for that. I do a Burns supper is haggis and it's always busy. I am very loyal.
I can say! So where are most of your customers from?
Mixed everywhere. First when I started, I thought that tourists would be my bread and butter and cream would be my blood cells, the blood cells but in fact are my bread and butter and tourists are my cream.
Do you find that there are many expatriates living in Sanur?
Yes, oh yes. Some live in Jakarta with their families in Sanur so they travel back weekends. Some work in Singapore. Sanur is very safe. I mean if you go to Kuta, the people there call it Snoreville, but you could walk at 2am with a good drink and the banjar here are so good that you would be 100% sure.
Bali was calm after the shooting terrorists, but there is only one correct terrorist and who is dead. I feel much safer here than I do in Glasgow. People have learned to realize that here they stand no nonsense. If you follow the rules, they love you.
Do you think the Banjar Sanur are more stringent and that is why he is so sure?
They are more diligent and they try to help. I had a conversation in January with the banjar and they told me how many people walk in Kuta and walk straight back in Sanur, as it is very noisy there. Here it is safe and has a nice feel about it. The danger is that it may be outgrown, but saying that each place has to grow and become better.
So, let's review your eclectic past. You were a WWF wrestler and had a black belt in judo - what is this picture of you with all these trophies
This was the collection of trophies from when I was a wrestler a year. Some of these trophies are now in museums. It was there many years. Look at how I was young!
What was your signature move?
There was a leg lock. I would be happy to demonstrate to you later. It was WWF American thing, all for entertainment.
So for someone who does not understand what is judo?
Judo is the art of self-defense. Purely self-defense. I am my first black belt in 1971.
And have you always had a mustache?
Oh yes. I used to have a shorter, but I looked a bit like Saddam Hussein.
When you were a hairdresser, what other things you've done?
I used to write in many magazines giving write-ups about the latest hair trends and readers sent their questions for me to answer. As an agony aunt for the hair! I did that for about five or six years. I also judged all kinds of global style. I represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games style and I'm a senior judge. I have a bronze medal for all major championships - I was the person who was ruthless, countries and teams and other disqualifying things. It is a work very, very hard to do.
Who is the most famous person you've decor?
You've probably never heard of him, but I do hair Lloyd Anderson. He was a famous opera singer who lived in the Isle of Man and fly me out to do her hair. Another famous person I know is Marti Pellow, singer of Wet Wet Wet that I used to have a drink with. I lived on the west end of Glasgow that time and he lived around the corner from me so that I used to have a drink with him every Thursday afternoon. He was the nicest person in the world with the nicest eyes you've ever seen.
Do you have plans change nationality?
Well, my passport is from the UK, but this is my country now as far as I am concerned and I love it here. People call me to me and ask: "Are you sure you did the right thing" and I still pinch and say "Yes"
Thank you William.. to get in touch, come to Bali Pub in Sanur and say hi!
