When you have sold your successful jewelry business in 2007, which motivated you to give such a significant way?
Well, the island of Bali has been very good for us, and we wanted to give something that reflects some of our values. I gave a TED talk a few years ago which attracted much attention. I opened with a joke.. "Al Gore has ruined my life I just sold a large company and should live in a beautiful home in the suburbs to play golf every day But a few years ago, I I saw his film An Inconvenient truth. " In fact, for many years in the jewelry company that we use sustainable practices. I live here since the middle of the seventy years, and Bali is still an amazing place with these very traditions intact craft and spirituality and culture, but it is easy to look around and see a place that is stressed the environment. Green School was our way of being part of the solution and help to return to Bali sustainable lifestyle that marked much of its history.
What is the basic philosophy of Green School?
The main idea is that while we do not look like the idea of most people of a school (remember, in most of the world, same people who design schools, design of prisons), our students learn here all the traditional academic subjects. We try to live every aspect of our life here as environmentally friendly as possible. We try to inspire students with a sense of possibilities with the way we live in the world and how we interact with the world.
Tell us how Green's Cathedral or the school center has inspired a new view of the construction.
The heart of the school is our main building and yes, some refer to it as the bamboo cathedral. This huge structure uses six kilometers from bamboo poles and consists of three rounds of intersection of three floors each. It has no walls or windows and relies on natural light and ventilation. We try to reduce our carbon footprint. The shape of all of our structures is curved and organic. We are literally "out of the box" school.
What is the Green School effect?
Our goal is that when students around the world and begin to make decisions, experience in Green School will affect a consideration their impact on the planet plays a role in their choice. In general, we have a few discipline problems. Students really care about and look at each other. The children are happy. Green School students are never bored!
There is a huge challenge to operate off the grid. How Green School has achieved this goal?
Today, we get a percentage of our electricity through solar energy and in a few months, we should produce the rest of our renewable energy by means of a micro project hydroelectric. All this was made possible through the generous sponsorship AKUO, a French renewable energy company.
What do you have planned for Earth Day?
We will celebrate Earth Day here with lots of activities and programs. On Friday, April 19th after school the secondary school children put on a Greenstock (Woodstock Green) just with a lot of music and other performances. It is open to the public and should be fun!
You have a global competition of scholarships for students Greenest on Earth. How did it happen?
Last year, the Earth Day, we were honored to be named the Greenest School on Earth by the Center for Green Schools at the US Green Building Council, the group began LEED certification for buildings environmentally friendly. We think this is a great way to showcase all the children around the world who do all kinds of green projects. We give three scholarships a year and we look forward to getting these children here to collaborate and learn with us. The hope is that we can all learn and inspire each other to become better stewards of the land.
