Meet Tim Scott. Advisor creation in Fremantle Media with an impressive 28 years of experience under his belt and plenty of funny stories to tell.
So Tim, how long have you worked in the TV industry?
I went at it for almost 28 years now. I started when I was 19 as a cameraman shooting groups and sports, then climbed the ranks as a technical director, sound engineer, Director, Producer, Executive Producer and finally my current position as Creative Advisor. It's been a wild ride!
What was your first experience working on a film / TV like?
There was a bowling pin show 10 American called Bowlerama and on my first day I had to audition against two other guys for the job one trainee of the show. It was winter, and in Minnesota and the call time was 4 hours, completely brutal. Carry equipment in the bowling alley was mortal and of course I had been out all night. The producer at the end of the day miserable showered me with compliments by his stale breath alcohol and said I really was planning what to do next and I'm a good boy and congratulations I arrived at work. Employment? It was an unpaid internship; I still can not believe I actually had to audition to be an unpaid intern. But it was my start in the industry and what I've learned, I kept it with me to this day, which is ... "Do not be end with a 59, alone, divorced TV producer with a bad drink and cocaine problem and produce a small market of bowling show in the dead of winter. "
So how did you finally go to Indonesia?
I'm divorced after 16 years of marriage, realized I could do what I wanted without asking anyone's permission, Downsized my life bought a ticket go and took a sabbatical. A search for "the cheapest country for a vacation in a year" led me to Asia, so I traveled through the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore and Indonesia. While visiting my good friend James Speck in Singapore, he made me his friend on the street and she said she was going to have an open position in the TV production company she works for in Jakarta. I sent some emails, got an interview and three months later, I was living in Kemang and supervise the Indonesian output Idol Season 6!
What were the main difficulties in moving from the American and Canadian television in the Indonesian television industry?
When I arrived, I was very surprised how I could produce TV here without prior knowledge of the language. But the understanding of culture is another thing! Since then, I have learned that television is the same all over the world and I have to trust my instincts and experience to it's almost always right. The greatest difficulty is the speed at which people work here and the level of quality they will accept. One could say that the television industry is here about 20 years behind the West in order to push for the best final quality is very difficult and not something that the market is used to. I think I said, "What is good but not good enough, it must be great" Five times a day My bahasa is good enough to follow the conversation and make everyone understand that you can not talk about how!. whose fat I am free.
So life how you appreciate here in the big durian, how do you stress after a long day or the work week?
life in Jakarta is never boring. I really enjoy the people, shopping centers and night life but I need blue sky and air costs quite often. I try spinning Bali or Bandung few times a month. If it is unusually bad day at work, you will find me at Eastern Promise in Kemang put to the smirking, chuckling expatriates who have been here much longer than me.
You oversee the production of shows like Master Chef and Indonesian Idol. What is it like working behind the scenes on reality TV?
Well, the Master Chief, it is very interesting, but it can also be very slow . What you see in 15 minutes on television, we shot for 14 hours and then just edited all good things together. Days can be very stressful and fun all at the same time, we call it, "Hurry up and wait." When we produce the live Idol "spectacular" shows that it is fun because it is Direct and anything can happen. the lead up airtime is filled with tension and when we finally go live ... there is no turning back! I used to run live TV for years, so I really like live TV production!
of all the shows you've worked on, which was your favorite?
My favorite time show was a show I created called "Let Bowl!" it was a bowling comedy competition where two people with a dispute come to the bowling alley to resolve their grievances by participating in a bowling match. commentators were both crazy and took off constantly subject, revealing deeply ashamed and personal facts of their lives. He was massively stupid and I love stupid!
Sounds like lots of fun! Have you behind the scenes funny stories to share?
I am executive producer and director on a show for Comedy Central Network in the United States called "New York Goes to Work." Tiffany show the star alias " New York "is a very charismatic black woman who is incredibly funny and very crazy. the premise was that she was looking to find the perfect job and every episode, she works a different job. that day, her work was to be a clown for children, but no one knew that she hates children. So NY gets all upset, and in a violent, did cry foul it hits on all and storms off in his big clown shoes, locks himself in his SUV and starts to drink lots of red wine. I cajoled my way into the van, drank a lot of wine with her and talked to her returning to all the promise I out on a date. the date was a complete failure, but the episode was really funny.
Do you have any advice for those who may be interested in pursuing a career in film or television industry?
do not. It can be a gypsy life and it is hard on relationships. Be a doctor or a lawyer or any other profession that you will get at the dinner table every night with your wife and your children and allow you to talk about how their day was. If you want to be creative, learn to paint.
Last question! What is your favorite TV show every time and why?
Saturday Night Live is my all time favorite TV show. It is the show that launched many of my comedy heroes and inspired me to follow my love for comedy!
