Meet the SlamJam brothers - Trevor, and Dustin Kyle Chee-A-Tow. Digital Film Makers Canada that free diving and staying true to the simple life.
The SlamJam Brothers Trevor, Kyle and Dustin
So guys, tell me what stuff you're shooting when
TC : We actually are spreading our wings and do different things like working with 3V to fitness, sports and motivational videos and recently we just started getting into fashion, behind the scenes stuff.
How long have you guys been in the industry
TC : Not very long at all. We are all self-taught and started as a hobby of ours. When we were traveling around, we always have a camera. Even before we started traveling, as children, we were always filming everything we were doing. When we started traveling here we wanted to capture the experiences we had, mainly to show our friends and encourage them to get off your butt and take a risk and come here. Get out of your comfort zone and experience elsewhere.
What is your inheritance
K : Caribbean, but we were born and raised in Canada, just north of Toronto. On the side of our Guyanese father is Chinese and they grew up in Suriname, the mother of Our side is Caribbean Indian.
Very cool. So tell me, why Bali
TC : We were doing teaching jobs in Korea and one of our colleagues was a teacher here in Bali and we said that we should come check out IT. So we came and traveled around many islands of Indonesia, including Flores, Lombok, Bandas, and I ended up taking a teaching job here. My brothers have gone home, but were still visit and we decided this is the place to do the thing the brothers together.
And how was it to start your own business? Was it difficult
TC : It was actually not that is the surprising thing. What happened was the group of Stevie Wonder was moving around Java Jazz Festival of Java and his entourage came here and with them was a Grammy winner, a trumpet artist and hip hop called Maurice Brown. We ended up hanging out with these guys and Maurice produced his first single and I told him that we would shoot his first music video and he agreed. So we shot this video for him, which is really good came out and gave us the confidence to believe that we can really do.
Where have you filmed his video
DC : Around Bali. That's what's so nice about Bali, there are so many places to take and places to choose what makes our job easier.
W hat location that you caused the most grief recently?
DC : It was probably the last we have done for 3V, who was on the bike around Bali. They wanted to do in a day, we thought funny. They will be on their bikes, we'll be on our bikes, we will be able to see all of Bali. We even brought our bathing suits and hammocks for relaxing and stuff, but it was not like that at all! We never knew how fast these guys the cycle! There was not relaxing and we were playing catch up all the time
K : It was incredible. They went all over the island of Bali on bicycles.
TC :. We really could not complain even if we were tired and did not sleep, because we were on motorcycles, but these guys were on bicycles
so how did it go video of Maurice Brown that you are now?
After we saw the clip went so well, we wanted to take us up to a year. Make different projects we want to go, not really looking for money, just to get better at shooting, directing and editing. There are a lot of cool people in Bali who have interesting stories to tell. Slowly, we made things organically and just rolled after.
DC : word of mouth. It is good that we can afford to choose the projects. It's nice not having to drive out of work.
Can you explain what roles you play three
TC : For shooting and editing, the objective is that all three of us can do all the filming and editing to us as we expand we can have three units and if someone wants to take a vacation they can. Roles-wise, I am the sales person, Dustin is the number and organizer and Kyle is more tech-savvy guy. But all three together are the creative force, not a particular person.
What would be your dream project
TC : It's funny because when we do interviews with artists and DJs which is usually one of the questions we ask, but I never thought to myself.
K : For me, I like the challenges of adventure videos and explore different sports. There is a new adrenaline slue documentary filmmakers where you must use different platforms and because I'm a tech guy I like that.
TC : I think our dream is to work in the world. We did an interview with DJ Erok for the Red Bull Formula 1 Racing Team, and he said, if we do it in Chile that we can work with RedBull and do some crazy projects like getting in fighter planes or skydiving and film free falls.
Have you guys found it difficult to adjust to life on Bali
DC : Well before I taught diving Bali free on a small island in Thailand, so for me, it was adjusted to the size of Bali, although it is not great. Everything was so far
Wow, you are a free diver
TC :? We all did. We are all certified for snorkeling, and it's one of the reasons why we love being here so much.
How long you guys can hold your breath
DC : Well, when I trained, I can me to take around three minutes. I am a certified instructor for snorkeling and my record depth of 50 meters. That's actually why I came to Bali to open a free diving school. It might be still in the plans, but we'll see.
This is actually all in the mind. There the art. It is to overcome the fact that you do not actually breathe. When you go into the water, there are many physiological things that occur on the body that make you adapt to water. It is a very relaxing experience because there is no sound, you are by yourself. - I almost compares meditation
TC : Here's how you can get down to these depths because you are really in a trance. We love the water and enjoy fishing spear so we really enjoyed traveling around Indonesia. We like to live in Bali but I think Bali is so different from the rest of Indonesia, where in some places, it feels like you're going back in time. It is a good reminder that the joys of simple living can bring.
So when you guys take off will you stay true to who you are
TC :? It is an important character trait of being very flexible with the environment and what is happening around you. Whenever we travel, our style is to travel locally, where to sleep, hang out with local people and really experience the culture.
It is good to know that you guys are grounded. Sometimes people in the entertainment industry are eaten by their ego. Do you think it is because you are the guy island
DC :? I think so and also because there are three of us to keep each other in check. We'll tell the other if one of us is acting out of line. We are very open and honest with each other.
