Patrick Beck is the general manager of Bordeaux-born of the Hotel Borobudur Jakarta, an epic property with 695 rooms on 23 acres of land opened in 1974 and celebrates its 42 e birthday this month. Spending most of his life as an expat, including the US and Bali, Patrick believes that education is extremely important in the hospitality industry and leads his team of 1,300 employees by listening and learning from them on a daily basis.

You were the general manager of the Hotel Borobudur since April 2015. At that time, what has this job taught you?

As CEO of this iconic hotel, I 've strengthened the five essentials of leadership in hospitality: vision, innovation, internal values, inspiration, and communication. Hotel Borobudur Jakarta me strategy, development, performance, teamwork, and being a great leader of our 1300 members strong taught.

It takes time and commitment to improve leadership skills, but it can definitely be done. The practice of these essential elements to become a great leader of hospitality can help us to work better with partners, regardless of our position. If we try something new and it does not work, try it a different way. Read on, to learn and to listen, and we can be on our way to live a travel rewarding and successful leadership.

Do you run programs of education or advancement of your staff?

Absolutely! We have a training program and strong development. Our training department operates on 20 classes a month, ranging from languages (English and Mandarin), the customer service, finance, management and leadership. The training of our employees is the responsibility of the hotel. Employee development is a shared responsibility of the management and the employee.

The responsibility of Borobudur Hotel is to provide the right resources and environment that supports the needs of members of the growth and development personnel. When it is possible, depending on the position and requirement, we believe in the promotion of the interior. Some of our colleagues worked 42 years for the hotel in a different capacity, and most of them are our top managers.

As general manager, part of your job is to pass your knowledge down to your team. How to make sure this is done on a daily basis?

The teaching part of my work and wants as general manager of the hotel. Share what you know your staff will not only foster a sense of autonomy in your hotel, it would actually make your job easier because you are giving them the knowledge and skills they can use to perform their work without constant help from you.

Every day I try to apply some principles to help stay focused on my priorities, they are: listen to my staff, to share my knowledge, collaborate, motivate, give credit where credit is due, and try to be cheerful as possible.

What kind of education did you have growing up?

I am very fortunate to have a loving family with me and especially a great grandmother who was very strict and taught me some good values in life. I grew up in the hospitality sector in France; my father was a leader and has contributed greatly to my career choice. I attended the hotel management college in Bordeaux, France where I got my BA and MA in Hospitality Management.

What three words sum up your work?

Challenging, happy, rewarding.

What are the challenges you face working in the hotel industry?

As in all hotels of high-end luxury, some of the keys to success are maintaining standards, focus on details and always try to be innovative. I always try to hire the best person for the job and this can be a big challenge.

Hotel Borobudur Jakarta has continued to increase its standards and we have developed the property as the years pass. But we kept a lot of culture and service levels, and everything that makes the hotel really special.

How have sites like TripAdvisor hotel GMs changed so as to work

I do not think these sites have a big impact on how we work ?; we are a little more aware of the customer experience, but we approach problems in the same way. There are hotels that evaluate in the top five in the world, and people are always complaining. I am always shocked by the comments .: From fruit quality, mobile phone reception on an island in the middle of nowhere, if the person at the desk was cheerful enough when they arrive

the good reviews that you feel good and the bad reviews make you do something about the problems. It is part of our time and we have to face it. But honestly, I prefer meeting face-to-face and a good handshake to resolve our differences.

Do you have any special offers at the moment?

Why the hotel is named after the temple Magelang

Borobudur Temple has three divisions symbolize the three "domains" of Buddhist cosmology :? Kdmadhdtu (the world of desires), Rupadhatu (the world of forms), and finally Arupadhatu (the formless world). The ground plane of Borobudur takes the form of a mandala. There are 10 steps Kamadhatu (foot), Rupadhatu (body), and Arupadhatu (head). We implemented this Mandala in our mission, called the 10 Points of quality.

What is your favorite quote on education?

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" by Nelson Mandela.

Last but not least, if you do could share a pearl of wisdom you have learned to work in your industry, what would it be?

'Listen' is the one I can identify most with, and I think helped me get where I am today. listening to customer needs and the needs of your employees are two of the most important priorities that all good CEOs should do.
